Jesus looked at the crowds and saw something others often missed.
He saw people who were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. And rather than responding with frustration, indifference, or condemnation, He had compassion for them.
In Matthew 9:35–38, Jesus travels throughout the cities and villages teaching, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing. But as He looks upon the crowds, He gives His disciples a different way of seeing the world:
“The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.”
The problem was not a lack of people who needed the truth. The problem was a lack of workers willing to enter the harvest.
In this message, we consider four movements in the passage:
• SEE — Learn to see people the way Jesus sees them.
• FEEL — Allow Christlike compassion to move our hearts.
• PRAY — Ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers.
• GO — Be willing to become part of the answer to that prayer.
The church is surrounded by a harvest field. People are hurting, confused, wandering, searching, and desperately in need of the Good Shepherd.
The question is not simply whether we recognize the need.
Will we have the compassion of Christ?
Will we pray for workers?
And will we be willing to go ourselves?
